都築響一, one of Japan’s most independent contemporary editors, began his career in the 1970s as a contributing editor for the cultural magazines POPEYE and BRUTUS. Reporting independently from the United States and elsewhere, he introduced contemporary art and cultural subjects overlooked by mainstream media, helping shape the magazines’ lasting cultural influence. Yet when offered a stable, well-paid editorial position, he chose to leave Tokyo, move to Kyoto, and remain outside the system. For over forty years, he has never received a monthly salary.

In 圈外編輯, 都築響一 reflects on his independent career, his focus on the ordinary and marginal, and his belief that true artistic vitality exists beyond institutions. As publishing shifts toward self-publishing, digital platforms, and new media, he argues that it is not publishing itself that is declining, but the industry.
