Photobook of A VIEW 2022 Portfolio Review

DEFCON 1 began from the collision between the experience of playing first-person shooter (FPS) games and the artist’s experience during military service of participating in a war game—specifically the Battle Command Training Program (BCTP), a war-training simulation that replaced live maneuver exercises. Through encounters with FPS games, military training simulations, and actual war reportage photographs and videos, the work points to moments of discomfort arising from strangely repetitive situations and events. By reenacting images consumed through photojournalism, video footage, and mass media, the project collects scenes of playful warfare: specific historical battles are staged, participants are equipped with period-appropriate clothing and gear, and predetermined roles are performed within these simulated combat settings.
