Taipei Art Book Fair 2018 — Zine Issue 1
The First Official Zine of Taipei Art Book Fair(草率季)!
"Who is willing to be poker-faced if one has the option of being careless and willful?"
“如果可以草莽率性,誰還想要一本正經?”
Take a leap back to the very first cosmic moment and rediscover the origins of Taipei Art Book Fair
—unfolding cross-cultural conversations about art book fairs that span cities, languages, and imaginations.
Diving into the heart of what "Taipei Art Book Fair" stands for — and finding their way doing it.
This zine is like an art book fair on paper, modest in size but expansive in scope.
The journey begins with the Taipei Art Book Fair team’s special correspondent to New York, where they visited the NY Art Book Fair headquarters.
They sat down with Max Schumann, Director of Printed Matter, and Sonel Breslav, Director of Fairs and Editions,
to learn from the world’s most influential art book fair.
The interviews offer deep insights into the operations and visions behind NYABF 2018, shedding light on many of its standout curatorial ideas.
Next stop: Tokyo. Through letter interview with Yusuke Nakajima(中島佑介), then-director of the Tokyo Art Book Fair ( TABF ), another special correspondent explored the bold and vivid scene of Asia’s largest art book fair.
Their discussion dives into the landscape of art publishing in Asia and the behind-the-scenes efforts of a vibrant book fair.
This zine then take us back in Taipei, turned to local pioneers— Not Big Issue, Taiwan’s first independent zine fair.
In a candid and casual chat with founder Chi-Min Chiu(秋璽民), they discussed the early days of Taiwan’s zine culture and its raw creative energy.
And of course, there’s Taipei Art Book Fair itself, launched in 2016 to spark the imagination of a new generation of creators.
Comic artist 日安焦慮(丁柏晏Ding ,Pao Yen) captures the origin story of the fair with wit and humor, and the creative moment behind the 2018 theme:
“bang bang bang — The Big Bang of the Universe.”
Also included:
A fiery tale from aerospace dreamer " Rocket Uncle " Wu Tsung-Hsin(吳宗信), a look at artworks from participating artists,
and vibrant photos from the 2018 event—like a wild galactic mash-up brought to life.
This isn’t just a book of words and images—it’s a captured spirit, a print ode to the chaos, joy, and spark of an art book fair.
If you believe that “perfection isn’t necessary, but sparks are essential,” then this book may just be a piece of your universe.
