Tai Chi Push Hands is not only a form of combat practice or competition, but also a fascinating way to explore one’s body, mind, and state of being.

Through physical contact and interaction between two people, participants sense the real dynamics shaped by different personalities, bodily habits, and life experiences. Beyond that, within the subtle flow of “force” and “qi” that emerges through cooperation, we come to see ourselves reflected in each partner who is different from us. Our ingrained patterns and spontaneous reactions cannot be hidden—and first-time participants are often amazed: “So this is who I am,” or “So this is who you are.” It becomes a living metaphor for one’s state of life, revealed through the body.

The workshop will guide participants step by step through Push Hands practice, from foundational exercises to rotating interactions with different partners, helping everyone observe and tune into these shifting flows.

The session concludes with a creative sharing segment: each participant receives a sheet of white paper and uses any form to describe or record the bodily flow experienced—of themselves and their interaction partner. It may take the form of a drawing, a few lines of text, or even a handful of musical notes.

Workshop Instructor

Shao Fan — a devoted wanderer of knowledge.

Holding a Master’s degree in Literature, Shao Fan has journeyed through philosophy, anthropology, mythology, psychology, cultural studies, and beyond. Along the way, they immersed themselves in Taiwan’s underground music scenes, eventually forming a band and settling into reggae rhythms and herbal culture. Through this path, they came to recognize a long-standing imbalance: an overindulgent mind and an absent body.

After 2018, guided by several mentors, Shao Fan began practicing qigong, tai chi, and Yijin Daoyin (Muscle-Tendon Changing exercises), returning to embodied cultivation.

In 2020, they began offering bodywork services rooted in the holistic flow between inner and outer, spirit and matter, consciousness and unconsciousness. They founded their personal studio brand, “Treesupsidedown” (顛倒樹). In addition to therapeutic fascia release and massage, their work has expanded to include group dream-reading sessions, tai chi instruction, and I Ching divination—creating comprehensive pathways for physical and spiritual attunement.

In 2024, Shao Fan stepped into the practice of internal alchemy (Neidan), integrating years of study and shifting mysticism from an academic or hobbyist pursuit into a daily lived practice.
