Painter and art director who weaves ink like thread capturing the beauty and vitality of life. Known as an unconventional figure in Japan’s theatre and performing arts scene he has produced countless poster designs. A member of 188 Corporation. His lifelong subject is women portrayed through a style that fuses traditional Japanese aesthetics with an avant-garde sensibility. Following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake Azuma deepened his inquiry into human existence depicting women overlain with Buddhist deities such as Yakushi Nyorai (Bhaisajyaguru) Monju Bosatsu the Twelve Divine Generals and the Ten Rasetsunyo—symbols of healing protection and rebirth. Since 2020 amid the turbulence of the COVID-19 pandemic the war in Ukraine and subsequent waves of global upheaval he has continued to portray the humour and beauty of humanity alive amid contradictions and trials playfully yet with a quiet sense of rebellion.
