Since 2019, Burndown Cake has invited various creators to produce the comic series “Heritage Sparks ,” launching a collection of comics centered on historical houses at sites such as Xinhua in Tainan, Bopi Liao in Taipei, and Yuanli in Miaoli.

In 2024, the comic artist merry tears was invited to set her story in Taipei’s Wanhua District. Told from the perspective of children—who lack any notion of property rights and are simply looking for a place to play—the narrative explores the issue of Taiwan’s historical buildings experiencing “bizarre fires” through a form of conflict that transcends mere material interests. Through the uncalculated, personal desires of these children, the story confronts the tension between the old and the new in the context of societal progress.

In this work, merry tears boldly employs a collage of visual elements to craft the comic’s panel narrative. The story, conveyed through the experiences of young girls, repeatedly revisits the motif of “being taken away,” whether it be open spaces, emotions, security, or even innocence. In the concluding section, eight pages juxtapose scenes of construction with those of burning; these two contrasting images become closely intertwined, addressing the contentious issues that Burndown Cake posed to merry tears.
