Customer Reviews

In 2022, I created a project called COPYCAT.

The idea came from a mistake at work , my graphic design partner and I used the Wechat’s photo-to-text extraction function. When we scanned a photographer’s name, one character was mistakenly recognized as a similar-looking but different word.

In Chinese many characters share similar forms but carry entirely different meanings. This reflects the idea that a tiny difference can lead to a major deviation — much like the saying “a hair’s breadth off, a thousand miles apart.” Just like copycat behavior, the surface may look the same, but the meaning is fundamentally different.

To explore this phenomenon, I created 14 pairs of Chinese characters that look similar but hold different meanings, highlighting the visual and conceptual gap between imitation and originality.
