Collected Wang Characters in the Sacred Teachings Preface documents Xuanzang’s journey to the West to obtain Buddhist scriptures and the process of translating them. Compiled by the Tang dynasty monk Huairen over more than twenty years, the work was assembled by collecting and recombining calligraphic fragments of Wang Xizhi. It is an important text and reference for the study of Wang Xizhi’s calligraphy. The full text contains 1,904 characters and is currently housed in the National Palace Museum.
This workshop uses 142 characters excerpted from Collected Wang Characters in the Sacred Teachings Preface as seen in the booth works. Participants will further select two characters from these excerpts to form a “meaningful word or phrase,” and, using traditional calligraphy tools such as brush, ink, and xuan paper, copy or create a four-panel (approximately 35 × 70 cm) calligraphy piece. The work may follow conventional, disciplined formats or take a more visual approach, exploring the expressive effects of writing through variations in ink density and line quality.

Workshop Instructor
Cheng Hsinyu is from Kaohsiung and is currently a third-year student in the Department of Arts Management at National Taitung University. Her creative practice spans design and calligraphy. Her learning journey extends beyond formal education—she once took a leave of absence to embark on long-term independent travels across Central and South America as well as Europe, using cross-cultural experiences to broaden her perception and understanding of the world. During her travels, Cheng Hsinyu engaged in observation, documentation, and hands-on labor as modes of learning, accumulating diverse life experiences and gradually transforming foreign cultures, bodily experiences, and her reflections on writing into creative inspiration. She is currently participating in work-exchange programs, continuing to explore the possibilities between mobility, temporary residence, and creativity.
Li Enzi, also from Kaohsiung, is currently enrolled in the preparatory program of the Graduate Institute of Arts Management at National Taitung University, with painting as her primary medium. Throughout her creative journey, she has actively participated in multiple art projects and public cultural events organized by faculty members, including sound art festivals, the Taitung Art Exhibition, and Grass Picnic Day, gaining practical experience in exhibition and project planning. Li Enzi demonstrates high engagement between creation and execution, steadily cultivating her understanding and integration of the art scene while continuing to deepen her own artistic direction within the context of contemporary art.
